Quilting Classes

Classes can be held either in the Meadow Rose Quilting Studio or another location.  All classes can be offered as a single student learning option or a group (maximum 12) class. 

Here is a list of some of the classes that I currently teach.  All "Free Motion Quilting" except the Basics and Next Steps classes can be taught on a domestic, midarm or longarm quilting machine.

Free Motion Quilting - BASICS.  Learn the basics of 5 shapes that make up all FMQ designs and the foundation for all future FMQ. Learn how to set up your machine, the basic mechanics of FMQ, and how to stitch the 5 basic shapes.  This class is ideal for those who have never tried FMQ before, but is also a valuable refresher for those have some experience.

Free Motion Quilting  - NEXT STEPS.   Students will gain confidence in their Free Motion Quilting by taking what they learned in the Basics class and learning how to put the basic shapes together to create a variety of quilting motifs.  Students will get lots of practice stitch and trying a variety of different motifs.

Free Motion Quilting - Sashing & Borders.  Explore the endless possibilities and variations that can be quilted in 2" to 6" wide sections. Play with changing the direction and size of designs that can be used in sashings and borders. Explore the freedom of playing with  variations to make unique designs!

Free Motion Quilting - Flowers & Leaves.  Learn how to use the 5 basic shapes to create a variety of flower and leaf motifs.  Students will learn how easy it is to make one little change for a whole new look.  Who knew there were so many flowers and leaves!

Free Motion Quilting - Tear Drop Feathers.   Free Motion Quilting Feathers are beautiful and not as difficult as you may think.  Learn how to stitch these versatile feathers as borders, wreaths and background fill designs.

Free Motion Quilting - Bounce Back Feathers.  Free Motion Quilting feathers are beautiful and not as difficult as many people think they are. In this class we'll focus on the the style of feathers that a lot refer to as longarm feathers. We'll play with the shape and size and add a variety of design elements.

Longarm Quilting - Beyond Meandering & Loops. Many longarmers start with a simple meander or loop design.  These are simple shapes and easy patterns to stitch.  Go further and learn 5 basic shapes of free motion quilting and how to use and combine them in a quilt.

Longarm Quilting - Technique Class.  Start with a simple meander or loop design— shapes that are easy to stitch. Go further and learn 5 basic shapes of free motion quilting and how to use and combine them in a quilt. Learn how to re-create a variety of quilting designs effortlessly and to achieve unique designs for your quilting. 

Longarm Quilting - Panto Basics. This class will show you how to use paper pantographs to easily quilt on a longarm machine.  If you have never used a longarm machine before, this class would be the perfect introduction.  We'll quilt a charity quilt as practice.

Longarm Quilting - Quilt It My Way. Sometimes the hardest part of quilting is choosing your quilting designs.  In this class we’ll explore, discuss and practice a variety of quilting motifs and see how a little change can make a big impact.  We’ll also look at how to combine motifs for a unified and pleasing quilt finish.

Amish Diamond Table Runner.  In this class, you will quilt an actual quilt. Learn and practice a variety of block, sashing and border designs. Students will be required to book time to make the quilt top or come to class with the quilt top made.

Strip Quilt Applique Table Runner:   Combine Strip Piecing, Quilt as you go and Machine Applique in this lovely seasonal table runner. A fun project that just needs to be bound. This class can be offered as a longarm class or as a domestic class.

I also teach a variety of other quilting related classes.

Borders and Bindings: No matter how beautiful the piecing, if the border isn’t sewn on properly, the quilt won’t lay flat and it will be miserable to quilt.  We’ll discuss the importance of piecing quilt borders correctly for a perfectly flat quilt.  We’ll review a few methods of binding achieve continuous binding and mitered corners. This class is lecture demo and can be broken into 2 separate classes.

Stained Glass. Learn the all-time easiest method of creating stunning stained glass quilts. This method uses a reverse applique technique. Students will learn how to make their own ¼” bias tape for the quilt leading.  Stitching the leading in place and quilting are done all at once.   (I can provide a simple rose bud pattern for the student to learn the technique from start to finish, or we can split the class and do it in 2 sessions.  I have a selection of patterns available.)

Alpha Banners.  Little wall quilts are quick and easy for decorating or gift giving.  Learn how to use freezer paper to create the patterns and to quilt and applique at the same time.  Students will also learn how to make easy hanging corners and finishing techniques.  (Although any applique pattern can be used, I have a selection of patterns available that include all the class techniques.

Thread Lace Scarf. Use your sewing machine and a selection of decorative and utility threads to stitch a beautiful wardrobe accessory.  Students will have plenty of time to stitch, but will probably be required to finish the project at home.
